Lars Vilks Attacked at Uppsala University

Lars Vilks, the Swedish cartoonist who drew Mohammed as a dog, was recently told that a scheduled lecture on free speech, to be held at Jönköping Högskolan, would be canceled due to "security concerns." This, of course, is a common evasion, intended to protect the brittle sensibilities of Muslim students while supposedly standing four square behind the right of free speech.

The Free Press Society – Aftonbladet has a report on the web (in Swedish)

The video (Allah ho Gaybar) which was showing during the attack is here

Iraq risks Sectarian War

Iraq's former prime minister Iyad Allawi, who scored a surprise win in the recent general election, warned today that the country risks descending into a new sectarian war, with feuding politicians attempting to sideline his supporters and the international community standing idly by.

In an interview with the Guardian Allawi said that since the bitterly contested 7 March election, in which his Iraqiya party list won 91 seats, political groups had abandoned efforts to build a united government and were regressing into sectarianism, encouraged by Iran.

Allawi

Allawi, who led the country for nine turbulent months from early 2004 as a US-appointed transitional prime minister, also warned that unless America and its allies safeguarded Iraq's nascent democracy, renewed conflict could spread around the region.

"This conflict will not remain within the borders of Iraq," he said. "It will spill over and it has the potential to reach the world at large, not just neighbouring countries. Now Iraq is at centre stage in the region. But it is boiling with problems, it is stagnant and it can go either way.

"I feel that we are not done and that the international community has failed this country."

Body uniformity

male-mannequin

So the male mannequins are getting skinnier as we in the general population get larger. No surprise there. The twinning of skinniness with girth growth has been evident since the days of Twiggy, when the formally differently sized and shaped female population were exhorted to take on this new diminishing of a woman's form and, as a result, got larger.

twiggy

Not that it was Twiggy's fault, but the ubiquity of her image created a sense in young women that to be stylish meant to be skinny, flat-chested with an ingénue face and straight hair. We women, and there were millions of us, tried to fit to the mode. There was dieting, lots and lots of it, and while it worked for some – for some of the time – mostly women got bigger rather than smaller as dieting cycling sent them on the fastest way to gain weight.

US to expand Pakistan drone strikes

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has been granted approval by the US government to expand drone strikes in Pakistan's tribal regions in a move to step up military operations against Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters, officials have said.

predetor

"Targets are chosen with extreme care, factoring in concepts like necessity, proportionality, and an absolute obligation to minimise loss of innocent life and property damage," a US counterterrorism official said.

But the numbers show that more than 90 per cent of the 500 people killed by drones since mid-2008 are lower-level fighters, raising questions about how much the CIA knows about the targets, experts said.

Only 14 of those killed are considered by experts to have been high ranking members of al-Qaeda, the Taliban or other groups. "Just because they are not big names it does not mean they do not kill. They do," the counterterrorism official said.

The US tally of combatant and non-combatant casualties is sharply lower than some Pakistani press accounts, which have estimated civilian deaths alone at more than 600.

Internet Police: London Signs Warn Against Accessing “Extremist” Material

Police signs have begun springing up in internet cafes in London warning users that they could be reported to the police and face criminal charges if they access “extremist”, “offensive” or “inappropriate” material. The signs, which state that the owners of the premises are actively working with the Metropolitan police, have drawn criticism due to their vagueness and questionable legality.

“Downloading or accessing certain material could constitute a criminal offence” states the bright pink sign (pictured below, click image for full photo).

internet_police

Not just illegal, please note, but “offensive or inappropriate”. Offensive to whom? Inappropriate to what? These are the sort of catch-all weasel-words you might expect in China. You might as well just have a notice that says: “We reserve the right to terminate your connection and report you to the police whenever we feel like it”.

The Dark Side of Disneyland Paris

To its European visitors, Disney sells fairytales. But the recent suicides of two park workers have exposed more sinister stories of a staff driven to breaking point.

disneyland

In a Magical Kingdom not so far away, somewhere between a place where you wish upon a star and dreams come true, Disney heroes and heroines live, once upon a time, in fairytales that are, happily, never ending.

Since the beginning of the year, two Disneyland Paris employees have committed suicide. One of them, Franck, a cook at Disneyland for 10 years, killed himself on the day that he was supposed to return to the park after a long period of sickness. According to his father-in-law, he scratched a message on the wall of his home which read: "Je ne veux pas retourner chez Mickey" (I don't want to work for Mickey any more).

Greek protesters storm the Acropolis

In a dramatic escalation of the anger unleashed by the economic crisis engulfing Greece, communist protesters stormed the Acropolis todayas the euro and world markets plunged on concerns about the debt-choked country's huge bailout from the EU and the IMF.

Protests-Greece

Irate trade unionists took over Athens' ancient landmark as fury over an unprecedented package of austerity measures, agreed in return for a multibillion euro aid package from eurozone nations and the IMF, intensified.

By the break of dawn the citadel's ramparts had been draped with banners proclaiming: "Peoples of Europe rise up."

Fears that the Greek crisis will spread to other countries sent markets reeling around the world today. The FTSE 100 in London closed down 142 points and, in New York, American markets fell by more than 2% as investors worried that a failure to push through austerity measures in Greece will lead to a spiralling loss of confidence in other indebted countries

Albanians demand vote recount

Thousands of opposition protesters have gathered in the Albanian capital, Tirana, to demand a recount of votes from last June's parliamentary elections.

tirana

At least 200 of them, including 22 Socialist party supporters, put up tents in a central square where they planned to stage a hunger strike, party officials said.

"This is a sacrifice we will make till the very end," Edi Rama, the leader of the Socialist party and mayor of Tirana, told protestors at Saturday's rally.
The protest and hunger strike were the latest developments in a political crisis that has brought the workings of government to a virtual standstill since the elections.

The coalition government of Sali Berisha, the country's prime minister, won 75 of parliament's 140 seats on June 28, but the socialists have said that the result was manipulated.
They have boycotted parliament to press their call for a recount, a demand that Berisha has said is illegal.

Pope Reins In Catholic Order Tied to Abuse

Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday took control of the Legionaries of Christ, a powerful and wealthy Roman Catholic religious order whose founder, a friend of Pope John Paul II, was found to have molested seminarians and fathered several children.

ordenacroma07q

The moves constituted the most direct action on sexual abuse since the most recent scandals have engulfed the church and prompted criticisms of the pope’s own handling of such cases as an archbishop in Munich and as a cardinal who led the office reviewing many sexual abuse charges.

In a statement on Saturday, the Vatican said that Benedict would appoint a special delegate to govern the Legionaries, an influential worldwide order that has been an important source of new vocations in a church that has struggled with a shrinking priesthood in much of the developed world. It was founded in 1941 by a Mexican priest, the Rev. Marcial Maciel Degollado.

France to trial biometric payment with finger scanners in shops

Shoppers in France could soon be able to use their finger to pay for everyday shopping, in a move that aims to tackle fraud and speed up supermarket queues.
High-street bank Accord has been given permission by the French data protection authorities to start a six-month trial into the new biometric payment system.

payfingerprintslavery
The idea had been rejected by the Commission Nationale Informatique et Liberté on several occasions in the past because of fears that storing fingerprint data posed a privacy and security risk.
However the new system developed by Accord records the unique pattern of veins underneath a person's index finger - not the fingerprint itself.
