David Cameron Criticised By Richard Dawkins For Comments To Clergy On Christianity

Prime Minister David Cameron has been criticised by leading atheist author Richard Dawkins for suggesting that a revival of traditional Christian values could counteract Britain's "moral collapse". Mr Cameron told senior Church of England clergy that a belief in "live and let live" had too often become "do what you please".

This "passive tolerance" of immoral behaviour had helped fuel the summer's riots, City excess, MPs' abuse of expenses and Islamic terrorism, he said at an event to mark the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible.

But the remarks were dismissed by Professor Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist and author of The God Delusion, who said the Bible was good literature but an "appalling moral compass".

Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Nicolas Sarkozy have addressed a rapturous crowd in the eastern town of Benghazi, a former rebel stronghold. The leaders received a hero's welcome at Liberty Square, a symbolic site for the rebels, in jubilant scenes that seemed to move both men.

Sarkozy said that "you have shown us your courage. We need a new courage for forgiveness and reconciliation".

David Cameron defends international aid rise with vaccine pledger

David Cameron has made an impassioned defence of increased spending on international aid, arguing that British people have a "moral" duty to help save children in the poorest nations from "entirely preventable" deaths.

Writing in today's Observer ahead of a London conference of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (Gavi), the prime minister accepts that the decision to raise overseas aid spending at a time of domestic austerity is highly controversial. But taking on "aid sceptics" in his own party, including the defence secretary, Liam Fox, Cameron makes clear that he will not allow the deficit to be used as an excuse to duck out of obligations to the most needy across the world.

The Tory leader, who will host the summit, will pledge to raise the UK's financial support for Gavi. The funding will allow wider distribution of two vaccines, against pneumococcal and rotavirus infections, to tackle the two biggest killers of children in the developing world: pneumonia and diarrhoea.

Of course, UK PM David Cameron is in charge of nothing, most likely not even the color of the tie he wears to a press conference, but it is in Cameron's name and his call for "muscular liberalism" that has given an already politicized gang of football hooligans the 'nod' of legitimacy they needed to move forward.
