Julian Assange will be granted asylum in Ecuador
Ecuador's president, Rafael Correa, has agreed to grant Julian Assange asylum, officials within Ecuador's government have said. The WikiLeaks founder has been holed up at Ecuador's London embassy since 19 June, when he officially requested political asylum. "Ecuador will grant asylum to Julian Assange," said an official in the Ecuadorean capital, Quito, who is familiar with the government discussions.
At the moment he faces arrest as soon as he leaves the embassy for breaching his bail conditions. "For Mr Assange to leave England, he should have a safe pass from the British [government]. Will that be possible? That's an issue we have to take into account," said Ecuador's foreign minister, Ricardo Patiño.
Government sources in Quito confirmed that despite the outstanding legal issues, Correa would grant Assange asylum – a move that would annoy Britain, the US and Sweden. They added that the offer was made to Assange several months ago, well before he sought refuge in the embassy, and following confidential negotiations with senior London embassy staff.

Minister in 'racist circumcision outrage'
Swedish minister of culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth's participation in a "racist spectacle" in which she carved up a cake depicting a naked black woman has sparked outrage and prompted calls for the minister's dismissal.
"In our view, this simply adds to the mockery of racism in Sweden," Kitimbwa Sabuni, spokesperson for the National Afro-Swedish Association (Afrosvenskarnas riksförbund) told The Local. "This was a racist spectacle."
Sabuni's comments come following Adelsohn Liljeroth's participation in an art installation that took place at Stockholm's Moderna Museet in connection with World Art Day on April 15th.

US threatened Sweden with sanctions over piracy
The United States warned Sweden earlier this year that if the country did not act to stop illegal file sharing it would face tough sanctions from the World Trade Organization, a Swedish official said Tuesday.
A swirling controversy over the closure of the popular file-sharing website The Pirate Bay on May 31st left many wondering who was behind the raid. The American government and the powerful Motion Picture Association were responsible for urging police action, Swedish government officials have now admitted.
“During the spring, several conversations took place between American and Swedish officials,” said Dan Eliasson, undersecretary of state in Sweden’s Justice Department. “During these talks the American officials said that Sweden could end up on the WTO’s surveillance list if Swedish authorities didn’t effectively combat crimes against copyright laws.”

Swedish Wildlife Photographer of the Year Admits to Faking Photos
A huge photo scandal erupted over in Sweden this past weekend after a well-known and award-winning wildlife photographer admitted to faking some of his photographs. Terje Helleso — a nature photographer who was named Nature Photographer of the Year by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in 2010 — was discovered to have published multiple images in which stock photographs of hard-to-find animals were Photoshopped into nature scenes.
The manipulations came to light when conservationist Gunnar Gloerson noticed that one of Helleso’s photographs of a lynx showed the cat with winter fur, even though the photo was supposedly taken around July. He was also suspicious of Helleso’s claim that he had seen 150 lynx in just 9 months, since Gloerson himself had only seen 15 of them in 52 years of his studies.

Father of Swedish Queen was a Nazi
The father of the Swedish Queen, Walther Sommerlath, was a member of the German Nazi Party and took part in the “Aryanisation” of Jewish-owned businesses.
The father of the Swedish Queen, Walther Sommerlath, took part in the expulsion of Jews from the German business sector. In April 1939, he bought a metal engineering plant in the Kreuzberg neighbourhood of Berlin. The previous owner was a Jewish engineer who, now destitute, had to leave Germany shortly afterwards. The Royal Court of Sweden declines to comment these new facts.

Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad's Nazi ties 'went deeper'
The founder of the Ikea furniture chain, Ingvar Kamprad, is facing further questions about his Nazi past following claims in a new book.
Author Elisabeth Asbrink says Mr Kamprad was an active recruiter for a Swedish Nazi group, and stayed close to sympathisers well after World War II. The details go beyond what Mr Kamprad has previously admitted.
The Swedish billionaire has said his involvement was youthful "stupidity", and the "greatest mistake" of his life. In her book, Ms Asbrink says Mr Kamprad actively recruited people to the fascist Sweden's Socialist Union (SSS). She says the activity prompted security police to set up a file on him in 1943 when he was 17 - the same year that he founded Ikea. Ms Asbrink says the security police intercepted his post, and noted that he "had some sort of functionary position" in a youth Nazi organization.
The intelligence services have refused to comment.

Swede arrested for building nuclear reactor in his kitchen
A Swedish man was arrested last month after authorities discovered that his effort to build a nuclear reactor in his kitchen had ended with a small meltdown. Richard Handl told The Associated Press Wednesday that he had obtained radium, americium and uranium, but the attempt split atoms had only been a hobby.
Most of the radioactive elements came from common items like smoke detectors and old clock hands, which were bought on eBay. He also purchased a Geiger counter from the U.S. by mail order.

Swedish Government staff knew of Stockholm bomb threat
A Swedish government employee allegedly knew ahead of time about last month's suicide bomb attack in Stockholm, but failed to inform Swedish security service Säpo, according to new media reports. Citing several sources with knowledge of the on-going investigation of the bomb attacks carried out by Taimour Abdulwahab, Swedish tabloid Expressen reported that an employee at a government agency knew in advance about the attack.
The day following the December 11th attacks, Swedish news agency TT reported that an Armed Forces employee had sent a warning to an acquaintance several hours before the bomb attack. In the message, the military staffer warned the acquaintance to avoid Stockholm's main pedestrian shopping street. "If you can, avoid Drottninggatan today. A lot could happen there...just so you know," the message said, according to TT.
Following an internal investigation carried out by the Military Intelligence and Security Service (Militära underrättelse- och säkerhetstjänsten -- MUST) the Swedish Armed Forces (Försvarsmakten) dismissed the allegations, Expressen reported on Wednesday. Säpo, which is still investigating the reports, said it never received a warning. Despite the denial, Säpo is continuing its own investigation into the allegations.

Former Bush strategist Karl Rove’s hand seen in Assange prosecution
Former Bush political strategist Karl Rove may be connected to a Swedish effort to prosecute WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, sources for several legal experts suggest. Rove is a longtime adviser to Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, who recently tapped the Republican operative to aid his 2010 reelection campaign.
Speaking to Legal Schnauzer's Robert Shuler, an unnamed source suggested that Rove is likely "playing a leading role in the effort to prosecute" Assange. The founder of the secrets website was arrested Dec. 7 in London after Sweden issued a warrant for alleged sex crimes.
After Assange's release on bail, Guardian obtained and published leaked details of the allegations against him. A WikiLeaks source told The Australian that the leaked police reports were "a selective smear through the disclosure of material."
And there's no coincidence that the charges against Assange originate in Sweden, Shuler's source said. For at least 10 years, Rove has been connected to Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik. More recently, Fredrik, who is known as "the Ronald Reagan of Europe," has contracted Rove to help with his 2010 re-election campaign
