Although they say they're concerned about inequality, economic policymakers continue to pummel low-income families and the jobless, and that’s bad for all of us.
A year ago I asked if Karl Marx was, in certain respects, right about capitalism, and argued that class struggle was making a comeback. The German philosopher believed the capitalist system was inherently unjust. Capitalism, Marx predicted, would inevitably concentrate wealth in the hands of a few while impoverishing everyone else. There is ample evidence that Marx’s theorizing is becoming reality.

Scores detained in Turkey police swoop
Police in Turkey have arrested 85 people following more than two weeks of anti-government protests. Turkish Interior Minister Muammer Guler said on Tuesday that 62 people had been detained in Istanbul, Turkey's biggest city, while 23 others had been arrested in the capital Ankara as a result of raids in several cities.
“The operations are against members of the Marxist-Leninist Communist Party, who also attended the Gezi Park protests, as part of an investigation being conducted by The detained people were accused of damaging public property and inciting violence.
Earlier, police detained a dozen people who stood still at Istanbul's Taksim Square in a form of passive defiance against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's authority after activists were ousted from a sit-in at Gezi Park over the weekend. Erodogan brushed aside criticism of the crackdown on Tuesday and vowed to increase the police's powers to deal with the unrest.

Germany marks 50 years since Berlin Wall
Germany is marking 50 years since the building of the Berlin Wall when the communist East closed its border, dividing the city for 28 years. Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit told a ceremony on Bernauer Street: "The Wall is history but we must not forget it." President Christian Wulff said Germany had been securely established as a reunified country.
The city observed a minute's silence at noon (10:00 GMT) in memory of those who died trying to escape. Soldiers from the East began construction on the morning of 13 August 1961

Cuba marks 50th anniversary of Bay of Pigs invasion
Cuba has held one of its largest military parades in decades, to mark the 50th anniversary of the failed CIA-led invasion at the Bay of Pigs.
Hundreds of thousands of Cubans marched in Havana to celebrate the occasion, seen as a triumph over the US. A key Communist Party congress, which is expected to back moves towards market reform, is also taking place. President Raul Castro has said Cuba must shrink the state and encourage private enterprise to save socialism. BBC News
The Bay of Pigs Invasion was an unsuccessful action by a CIA-trained force of Cuban exiles to invade southern Cuba, with support and encouragement from the US government, in an attempt to overthrow the Cuban government of Fidel Castro. The invasion was launched in April 1961, less than three months after John F. Kennedy assumed the presidency in the United States. The Cuban armed forces, trained and equipped by Eastern Bloc nations, defeated the invading combatants within three days. (Wikipedia)

STASI: East Germany's Secret Police
About one in 50 adults in East Germany collaborated with the STASI - East Germany's Secret Police. Relative to population, it was the largest secret service in the history of mankind.
"Shield and Sword of the Party" is what the Stasi calls itself. the Party dictatorship never dares not to face its opponents.
Instead, the Stasi has to keep all dissenting opinions under control. The goal is a total surveillance society, everyone informing on everyone.
"STASI" takes a look at the extent of Stasi work: including the Ministry's enormous headquarters in Berlin, local offices, dentention facilities, disguised isolation camps, hidden bunkers, reconnaissance planes, eavesdropping stations and East Germany's secret execution site.

North Korea has sentenced two US journalists to 12 years hard labour
North Korea, facing U.N. sanctions for last month's nuclear test, on Monday raised the stakes in its growing confrontation with Washington by jailing two U.S. journalists to 12 years hard labor for "grave crime."
The sentence follows U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's warning on Sunday the United States was considering putting the reclusive North back on its list of states that sponsor terrorism, which would further isolate the impoverished country.
The journalists, Euna Lee and Laura Ling, of U.S. media outlet Current TV, were arrested in March working on a story near the border between North Korea and China. The trial for the two, working for the company co-founded by former Vice President Al Gore, opened on Thursday.
"The trial confirmed the grave crime they committed against the Korean nation and their illegal border crossing as they had already been indicted and sentenced each of them to 12 years of reform through labor," the official KCNA news agency said in a brief dispatch.

What do the Chinese know about Tiananmen Square?
Most people, especially the young, have no idea what happened on June 4, 1989. The web, and search engines in particular, are sufficiently censored to make it very difficult to access reliable information about the event. Of course, if you're really motivated you'll find a way around it. Automatic filters for example are more efficient in Chinese than foreign languages, so if you type the key words in English on Google China we get a few pages coming up with the real story. Web users have also found a way to avoid prohibited texts getting picked up by moderators on discussion forums. One of the techniques is to write so that read from left to write (which is the normal way to read Chinese), the text says nothing, but if read from top to bottom is about the massacres.
