Swiss army prepares for euro zone unrest

With anti-austerity protests across Europe resulting in civil unrest on the streets of Athens and Madrid, Switzerland -- the European country famed for its neutrality -- is taking unusual precautions.

It launched the military exercise “Stabilo Due” in September to respond to the current instability in Europe and to test the speed at which its army can be dispatched. The country is not a member of the union or among the 17 countries that share the euro.

Swiss newspaper Der Sonntag reported recently that the exercise centered around a risk map created in 2010, where army staff detailed the threat of internal unrest between warring factions as well as the possibility of refugees from Greece, Spain, Italy, France, and Portugal.

Swiss Politician Allegedly Offered Friend's Wife and Daughter To Cannibals

Hans Ulrich Rudel, a Swiss politician and convicted murderer, is now accused of putting out an ad to attract potential cannibals interested in eating his pal's wife and 12-year-old daughter. The Local reports that Rudel, who co-founded the Embrachertal branch of the Conservative Party, is accused of putting the ad out in 2010 in an effort to get his friend's wife "out of the way" during an ugly divorce.

The ad said the mother and daughter were "keen to meet gentlemen interested in slaughter and dolce who would like to roast us on a spit." "Dolce," as Rudel allegedly told police, was his word for cannibalism.

The Daily Mail reports that Rudel received dozens of responses to the ad, but the person he replied to turned out to be an undercover cop. "There are a lot of cannibals out there," he said before being sentenced, according to the Mail.

Suspected Swiss nuclear smugglers could faces charges

A Swiss judge called Thursday for the indictment of three engineers, all from one family, for their alleged role in a black market nuclear trafficking ring which aided Libya and Iran.

The three, according to the judge's report, were involved in the smuggling business of Pakistani nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan, whose rogue operations were closed in late 2003 largely due to efforts by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and other Western agencies.

Following a two-year investigation, Federal Magistrate Andreas Mueller concluded that Friedrich Tinner and his sons Urs and Marco should be charged for trafficking goods for the development of nuclear weapons programmes.
