China Declares War
China's leaders are waging what state media has described as "an all out war" on the fierce winter weather that has brought travel chaos as well as dozens of deaths to much of the country.
The government has ordered some 460,000 troops deployed to clear snow, as China's top officials move to prevent the crisis becoming a political issue.
The moves comes as an unusually harsh winter, bringing weeks of heavy snowfall, has paralyzed transport across eastern, central and southern provinces and stretched food and energy supplies to the limit.
"The People's Liberation Army has ordered its troops to go all out to help those battling the heavy snow," the China Daily said.

Useful Green Idiots
Al Gore has declared the discussion over, even though, as Paul Joseph Watson notes, “over 100 prominent scientists who have signed a letter slamming the UN move” toward a carbon tax “as a futile bureaucratic scheme” and “pointing out the results of a recent study in the International Journal of Climatology which concludes that climate change over the past thirty years is largely a result of solar activity and that attempts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions are irrelevant.”
Al Gore, Mr. Green himself, is an inch short of having these heretics flayed alive for the “eco crime” of disagreement based on reality-based science. Like the converso minority of yore, these scientists are to be persecuted for heresy. The only thing missing is the rack, although Al and the new Green bureaucrats — globalist autocrats to the man and woman — expect these enviro-criminals to engage in groveling fashion to the auto de fe, that is to say to ask for penance. Al is our Tomás de Torquemada reborn, the Inquisitor General of the Earth cult.
Bono’s doing his part, playing the clown at Davos, and never mind that the grain required to fill a 25-gallon SUV gas tank with ethanol will feed one person for a year and the grain needed to fill that same tank every two weeks over a year will feed 26 people, as Lester Brown points out for the Globalist. “Simply put, the stage is being set for a head-on collision between the world’s 800 million affluent automobile owners and food consumers.”

No Downers
Since its inception Farm Sanctuary has been working to stop the horrid abuse and intentional neglect of downed animals at farms, stockyards, auctions and slaughterhouses by rescuing downed animals, investigating the industry and advancing policy to protect downers. Farm Sanctuary was established with the rescue of a lone animal who was left for dead on a pile of dead animals. Since that time we have successfully worked to rescue additional downed animals and enact the first state law on downed animals in the country in California in 1994. Since then Farm Sanctuary has targeted downers as a priority campaign, with major changes over the past 20 years. Still much work needs to be done to ban the abuse of downed animals.
Just the words produce an image of a suffering, sick animal. Sadly, this nightmarish vision is all too real every year for untold numbers of animals at stockyards, slaughterhouses, and production farms. The meat and dairy industries call them "downers"- animals so diseased or badly injured that they cannot even walk.
Many segments of the meat industry deal in "downers" because they can still sell them for human consumption. Profit, not humane considerations, guides industry practice and downed animals suffer gross negligence and abuse at livestock facilities across the country.

Suharto is a Dead Fish
To maintain order, Suharto greatly expanded the funding and powers of the Indonesian state apparatus. He established two intelligence agencies — the Operational Command for the Restoration of Security and Order (KOPKAMTIB) and the State Intelligence Coordination Agency (BAKIN) — to deal with threats to the regime. Suharto also established the Bureau of Logistics (BULOG) to distribute rice and other staple commodities granted by USAID. These new government bodies were put under the military regional command structure, that under Suharto was given a "dual function" as both a defense force and as civilian administrators.
In economic matters, President Suharto relied on a group of American-educated economists, nicknamed the "Berkeley Mafia," to set policy. Soon after coming to power, he passed a number of reforms meant to establish Indonesia as a center of foreign investment. These included the privatization of its natural resources to promote their exploitation by industrialized nations, labour laws favorable to multinational corporations, and soliciting funds for development from institutions including the World Bank, Western banks, and friendly governments.
Between 300,000 and one million Indonesians were killed in the mass-killings following the arrest of PKI members in Suharto's cabinet on 6 October 1965. Both the military and auxiliaries from conservative Muslim, Catholic, Hindu and secular nationalist militias conducted the killings. Though most communists were identified by locals, the CIA is known to have supplied the Indonesian military with a list of 10,000 suspected communists. Ironically, a CIA study of the events in Indonesia assessed that "In terms of the numbers killed the anti-PKI massacres in Indonesia rank as one of the worst mass murders of the 20th century..".
It must also be noted that, in addition to the CIA, British and Australian intelligence were well aware of events as they transpired.
Time Magazine presented the following account on 17 December 1966 : "Communists, red sympathisers and their families are being massacred by the thousands. Backlands army units are reported to have executed thousands of communists after interrogation in remote jails. Armed with wide-bladed knives called parangs, Moslem bands crept at night into the homes of communists, killing entire families and burying their bodies in shallow graves."
"The murder campaign became so brazen in parts of rural East Java, that Moslem bands placed the heads of victims on poles and paraded them through villages. The killings have been on such a scale that the disposal of the corpses has created a serious sanitation problem in East Java and Northern Sumatra where the humid air bears the reek of decaying flesh. Travellers from those areas tell of small rivers and streams that have been literally clogged with bodies."

"I have never wanted to use girls that are too skinny," he said. "I prefer girls that show off my clothes in the best way. Unfortunately though, the stylists and also the media have interfered and they now want models that are incredibly thin."

Big Brother Is Blocking
Should your cell phone company decide who can send you a text message? Should your Internet service provider block your Internet movie because it doesn’t like the file-sharing service you’re using?
We suspect that most consumers would say no. When people sign up for a communications service, Big Brother shouldn’t come with the deal.
Two recent incidents, however, show that some corporations are willing to stick their noses in their customers’ business. The Federal Communications Commission should tell them to butt out. If the FCC won’t, Congress should.
The first involved Verizon. Last September, the phone company blocked a text-message subscription service offered by the pro-abortion-rights group NARAL. The key phrase there is “subscription service.”
Phone companies do a service for subscribers by blocking a lot of text-message “spam” ” unwanted commercial come-ons that drive e-mail users crazy. But the NARAL service wasn’t that. Cell phone users had to sign up to get the messages.
Politicians and interest groups of all stripes are using text messaging to rally their supporters. A study by Princeton University and the University of Michigan found that text-mail reminders raise voter turnout by 4.2 percent among young people

Gazans flood through Egypt border
Tens of thousands of Palestinians have surged into Egypt from the Gaza Strip after masked militants destroyed parts of the border wall.
Gazans rushed to buy food, fuel and other supplies that have become scarce because of an Israeli blockade - aimed at stopping rocket attacks from Gaza.
Egyptian police have so far taken no action to stop people crossing.
Israel has expressed concern at the events at the border and has urged Egypt to restore security there.
Correspondents say the breaching of the border is a security concern for Israel, as Egypt is a main source of weapons for the militant groups in Gaza.

Pre-emptive nuclear strike a key option, Nato told
The west must be ready to resort to a pre-emptive nuclear attack to try to halt the "imminent" spread of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, according to a radical manifesto for a new Nato by five of the west's most senior military officers and strategists.
Calling for root-and-branch reform of Nato and a new pact drawing the US, Nato and the European Union together in a "grand strategy" to tackle the challenges of an increasingly brutal world, the former armed forces chiefs from the US, Britain, Germany, France and the Netherlands insist that a "first strike" nuclear option remains an "indispensable instrument" since there is "simply no realistic prospect of a nuclear-free world".

Angry Gazans Storm Rafah Crossing
Dozens of Palestinian protesters have stormed the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, demanding that the frontier be opened to ease the blockade imposed on the territory by Israel.
Several protesters were wounded as Egyptian police opened fire in the air and used batons and water canons to push back the protesters.
The demonstrations on Tuesday came as Israel allowed a few fuel trucks into Gaza, easing the punishing blockade of the Hamas-run territory.
Rafah is the only border crossing out of the Gaza Strip that bypasses Israel.
Some angry protesters complained that Gaza was under siege from both Israel and neighbouring Arabs.

UN transformation proposed to create 'new world order'
Gordon Brown has begun secret talks with other world leaders on far-reaching reform of the United Nations Security Council as part of a drive to create a "new world order" and "global society".
The Prime Minister is drawing up plans to expand the number of permanent members in a move that will provoke fears that the veto enjoyed by Britain could be diluted eventually. The United States, France, Russia and China also have a veto but the number of members could be doubled to include India, Germany, Japan, Brazil and one or two African nations.
Mr Brown has discussed a shake-up of a structure created in 1945 to reflect the world's new challenges and power bases during his four-day trip to China and India. Last night, British sources revealed "intense discussions" on UN reform were under way and Mr Brown raised it whenever he met another world leader.
The Prime Minister believes the UN is punching below its weight. In 2003, it failed to agree on a fresh resolution giving explicit approval for military action in Iraq. George Bush then acted unilaterally, winning the support of Tony Blair.

President Bush Arming Fellow Tyrants Globally
By Sherwood Ross
“In the last six years, Washington has stepped up its sales and transfers of high-technology weapons, military training, and other military assistance to governments regardless of their respect for human rights, democratic principles, or nonproliferation,” according to a report in the current (Jan.-Feb.) “Arms Control Today,” published online by the Arms Control Association (ACA). “All that matters is that they have pledged their assistance in the global war on terrorism.”
You read it right. The Bush regime has been using 9/11 as an excuse for the reckless sale of weapons around the globe, working $16.9 billion in new arms deals in 2006, 41.9 percent of the world’s total. This compares to runners-up Russia, $8.7 billion, and Great Britain, $3.1 billion, writes Rachel Stohl, a senior analyst at the Center for Defense Information (CDI), which tracks such data.
Since 2001, CDI has tracked skyrocketing U.S. military aid to the following 25 countries that “have a unique role in the ‘war on terror’ through the strategic services they provide the U.S.”: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Bahrain, Oman, Yemen, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Algeria, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Kenya.

Blair 'stabbing Hillary Clinton in the back' by supporting Republicans
Tony Blair was accused of betrayal last night as he waded into the American Presidential campaign to support George Bush's Republican world view.
As the former PM recommended Mr Bush's policies to 400 millionaire bankers in Las Vegas, former ally Bill Clinton was campaigning in Nevada for his wife Hillary, who hopes to be the Democratic candidate for the White House and is an arch Bush critic.
In a move liable to be interpreted as a stab in the back for Hillary's campaign, Mr Blair – who was paid £125,000 for his 35-minute speech – said: "George Bush is an amazingly strong and steady President...which is what America and the world needs."
The New "Black Pope"
The Jesuits were once such a powerful force in the Roman Catholic Church that their elected leader was unofficially called the "black pope" a nod both to his influence and to the order's predeliction for simple black cassocks. Indeed, it is said that the rest of the Church never allowed a Jesuit to be elected to the real papacy for fear of concentrating too much power in the hands of the order. On Saturday, Jan. 19, the Society of Jesus — the order's formal name — elected a new "black pope." Will he be able to help them regain the influence they've lost over the last few decades as their increasingly progressive reputation has clashed with recent traditionalist popes?
The gathering of 217 Jesuit leaders in Rome chose little-known Father Adolfo Nicolas, 71, as their new "Superior General", a position which has historically been a lifetime posting. The leader of the Jesuits has sway over a network of priests, universities, hospitals and other missionary institutions around the globe. Though there was no real white smoke to alert the world that they'd found a new leader, as there is in the conclave of Cardinals that elects the Pope, the vote is nonetheless a sacred and secret affair. An oath of loyalty is recited before the balloting, and tradition holds that all voting members remain closed in the hall after a decision is reached, while a single messenger brings the name of the new leader to the Pope, who must be the first non-Jesuit to get the news.

A Dead FISHer
Bobby Fischer R.I.P.
Hours after the September 11, 2001, attacks Fischer was interviewed live by Pablo Mercado on the Baguio City station of the Bombo Radyo network, shortly after midnight 12 September 2001 Philippines local time (or shortly after noon on 11 September 2001, New York time). Fischer commented on U.S and Israeli foreign policy that "nobody cares ... [that] the US and Israel have been slaughtering the Palestinians for years". Informed that "the White House and Pentagon have been attacked", he proclaimed "This is all wonderful news." Fischer stated "What goes around comes around even for the United States" and said that if the U.S. fails to change its foreign policy, it "has to be destroyed." After calling for President Bush's death, Fischer also stated he hoped for a coup d' etat in the U.S., and that the military government would then execute "hundreds of thousands of American Jewish leaders", "arrest all the Jews", and "close all synagogues".
Subsequent to that interview, Fischer's "right to membership in the United States Chess Federation [was] canceled" by a unanimous 7-0 of the USCF, taken on 28 October 2001. In 2006, that decision was subsequently "vacated" by the same Board.
Detention in 2004 and 2005
Fischer was arrested at Narita International Airport in Narita, Japan, near Tokyo for allegedly using a revoked U.S. passport while trying to board a Japan Airlines flight to Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila, Philippines. The passport, issued in 1997, had been revoked in 2003, although Fischer asserts that it was valid and that he never received any notification that it had been canceled. Like most passports, U.S. Passports are property of the issuing government, and can be revoked without notification.

EVIDENCE grows... Dr. David Kelly & the Baha'i Faith
Note well: In short, the Baha'i Faith had a great deal to gain by the war going forward, reclaiming the House of Baha'u'llah in Baghdad and the Garden of Ridvan, extending the Baha'i pilgrimage circuit to Iraq, and leading to a more tolerant climate there and generally in the Middle East, for Baha'i expansion, all long sought goals. The interference of the Baha'i administration in Dr. Kelly's work should seriously be considered and investigated. Kelly appears to have disclosed the apparent State secret of his identity, as an official who had worked on the dossier, to Baha'is on October 5, 2002, including to members of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of the United Kingdom, who would not have failed to pass information to the Baha'i Universal House of Justice in Haifa, Israel.
My comments on Barnabus (sic, Barnabas) Leith's testimony before the Hutton Inquiry also at disclosed : Roger Kingdon versus Barney Leith's Account http://www.fglaysher.com/bahaicensorship/Kelly100502.htm
The role of Baha'i Mai Pederson now raises many complex, if not Byzantine, possibilities and should also be carefully investigated by the Hutton Inquiry. "Kelly did not kill himself."

China and the Olympics
Beijing was selected to host the summer Olympics in 2008 despite its dismal human rights record. Although China is a rising global economic power, the government continues to restrict even the most basic political rights and civil liberties of Chinese citizens. Chinese citizens have no say in their leadership, the judiciary is not independent, and freedom of speech, association, and religion are all severely restricted.
Ten Things You Should Know about China
- Half of the world’s population living in countries designated “Not Free” by Freedom House live in China.
- China imprisons more journalists than any other country in the world.
- The Chinese government maintains one of the world’s most sophisticated systems of blocking access to websites and monitoring its citizens’ e-mail communications.
- The one-child policy leads to forced abortions, a shortage of females, and an increase in trafficking of people.
- 65 crimes in China carry the death penalty.
- The Chinese government has supported extremely repressive regimes such as those governing Burma, Sudan and Zimbabwe.
- Tibetan Buddhists, Christians, Muslims and practitioners of other religions face frequent harassment.
- Thousands of North Korean refugees who escape into China are sent back to North Korea to face arrest, torture, and sometimes death.
- Public protests have been on the increase in recent years.
- Chinese citizens deserve better.

Japanese Whaling Fleet On the Run With Two Sea Shepherd Hostages
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's ship Steve Irwin is in full pursuit of five vessels of the Japanese whaling fleet including the Japanese supply vessel Oriental Bluebird.
The Japanese harpoon vessel Yushin Maru No. 2 has taken two Sea Shepherd volunteer crew members hostage. Benjamin Potts 28, an Australian citizen and Giles Lane, 35, a citizen of Great Britain are being held hostage onboard the whaling vessel. Both men were assaulted and then tied to the railings of the whaler. They were then moved and tied to the radar mast by the whalers.
Both men boarded the Yushin Maru to deliver a message to the Japanese captain that the whalers were in violation of international conservation law by targeting endangered species in an established whale sanctuary in violation of a global moratorium on commercial whaling. They also notified the captain that Australia had just passed a court ruling barring Japanese whalers from the Australian Antarctic Economic Exclusion Zone.
All of this activity has taken place in the area of 60 Degrees South and 78 Degrees East. All activity has been documented from the Sea Shepherd helicopter and the fast moving Delta vessel. The Steve Irwin has dispatched a small fast Delta boat and a helicopter to attempt to persuade the Yushin Maru No. 2 to stop and release the hostages.
Captain Paul Watson has notified the Australian Federal Police that he would like to see kidnapping charges brought against the Japanese whalers. The Australian government and the British Embassy have been informed that their citizens are being held hostage on an illegally operated Japanese whaling ship in International waters.

Prisoners 'to be chipped like dogs'
Ministers are planning to implant "machine-readable" microchips under the skin of thousands of offenders as part of an expansion of the electronic tagging scheme that would create more space in British jails.
Amid concerns about the security of existing tagging systems and prison overcrowding, the Ministry of Justice is investigating the use of satellite and radio-wave technology to monitor criminals.
But, instead of being contained in bracelets worn around the ankle, the tiny chips would be surgically inserted under the skin of offenders in the community, to help enforce home curfews. The radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, as long as two grains of rice, are able to carry scanable personal information about individuals, including their identities, address and offending record.
Professionals in the criminal justice system maintain that the present system is 95 per cent effective. Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is unproven. The technology is actually more invasive, and carries more information about the host. The devices have been dubbed "spychips" by critics who warn that they would transmit data about the movements of other people without their knowledge.
Consumer privacy expert Liz McIntyre said a colleague had already proved he could "clone" a chip. "He can bump into a chipped person and siphon the chip's unique signal in a matter of seconds," she said.
One company plans deeper implants that could vibrate, electroshock the implantee, broadcast a message, or serve as a microphone to transmit conversations. "Some folks might foolishly discount all of these downsides and futuristic nightmares since the tagging is proposed for criminals like rapists and murderers," Ms McIntyre said. "The rest of us could be next."

Hillary Attacks Obama from Every Angle
Clinton and her surrogates are attacking from every direction, hoping something will stick.
The attacks are as varied as they are contemptible. Let's take a look at the dirty laundry list. Put on your galoshes, the mud is mighty thick.
1. Obama is too liberal. HuffPost's Tom Edsall reports: "Hillary's aides point to Obama's extremely progressive record as a community organizer, state senator and candidate for Congress, his alliances with 'left-wing' intellectuals in Chicago's Hyde Park community, and his liberal voting record on criminal defendants' rights as subjects for examination."
Dear God, not "left-wing intellectuals"! Aren't you grateful Hillary warned us in time? The last thing voters in a Democratic primary want is someone with a "liberal voting record." Apparently, Mark Penn is still advising the campaign.
2. Obama is too conservative. In a sleazy direct mail letter sent to New Hampshire voters, Clinton tried to twist Obama's record on abortion, saying he has been "unwilling to take a stand on choice."
Really? Tell that to Planned Parenthood and NARAL, both of which have given Obama 100 percent ratings for his support of abortion rights. I asked NARAL about this mailing. "We are fortunate to have such strong pro-choice candidates like Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, as well as former Sen. John Edwards and Gov. Bill Richardson, running for president," Elizabeth Shipp, NARAL's political director emailed me. "We are confident that any one of these candidates would protect and defend a woman's right to choose, if elected president."

“Garbage Operation” entangles U.S. and 2 Latin Nations
One day last August, an airport policewoman in Buenos Aires noticed something peculiar as she was monitoring a baggage scanner: the appearance of six perfect, dense rectangles inside a suitcase.
She asked the passenger, Guido Alejandro Antonini Wilson, one of eight people aboard a private plane chartered by Argentina’s national oil company that flew from Caracas, to open the case. “He became frozen and did not say a word,” the policewoman later said in a radio interview.
When he did open it, nearly $800,000 in cash spilled out.
Mr. Antonini, a businessman with Venezuelan and American citizenship, is now at the center of a spy mystery and diplomatic imbroglio involving Argentina, Venezuela and the United States. American officials portray the episode as a rare glimpse into President Hugo Chávez’s use of oil wealth to spread his influence, saying the cash was destined for the campaign of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, Argentina’s new president.
Venezuela and Argentina describe it as an amateurish American attempt to smear their governments. Mrs. Kirchner has called the case a “garbage operation” by Americans, while Venezuela’s official news agency claimed this week that it was a plot by the Central Intelligence Agency.

Iraq pummeled under in Punishing strike
Iraq was pummeled under the weight of 40,000 pounds of bombs in a punishing strike launched by the U.S. military this morning.
U.S. warplanes dropped the massive payload on more than 40 targets on Baghdad's southern outskirts this morning in a major strike on al Qaeda safe havens, the military said in a statement.
The U.S. Air Force dispatched two B-1 bombers and four F-16 fighter jets, aiming at three large target areas in Arab Jabour, an area of date palm groves that has become a haven for al Qaeda fighters driven out of other areas.
The attack was described as part of Operation Phantom Phoenix, a countrywide offensive against al Qaeda guerrillas that U.S. forces launched this week.
Air strikes on such a large scale have been rare in Iraq, especially over the past few months when the intensity of military action tapered off as overall violence declined.
Operation Phantom Phoenix has so far also included a large-scale sweep in Diyala province north of Baghdad by thousands of U.S. and Iraqi troops. Six American soldiers were killed on Wednesday by an explosion in a booby-trapped house.
The massive strike comes as a new report estimates 151,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed in the war-torn country in the first three years after the war began. The report stops counting in June, 2006.

These are strange times, in which to many of us the battle already seems to have been won. And yet we have to accept that all the time harsh laws are being enacted, lawsuits levied against innocent people, arrests made - all intended to destroy or delay what is an inevitable change in how we look at creative work. We hope STEAL THIS FILM II can be useful in bringing new people into the legions of those prepared to think creatively about the future of distribution, production and creativity.

Second thoughts on Charlie Wilson's War
Using films to rewrite history is a long tradition in Hollywood, and the recent film “Charlie Wilson’s War” is another example. It presents the U.S. covert support for proto-Taliban forces as the work of a ‘rogue Congressman’, when the facts are that the Reagan and Carter administrations were the driving force behind the covert support for Afghani “freedom fighters.” Covert operations were the hallmark of the Reagan era – in El Salvador, in Nicaragua, in Afghanistan, in Iraq and Iran – and those same people are still in power – Elliot Abrams, the Bush clan, James Baker III, etc. Such operations created a vast reservoir of ill will towards the U.S., which led to the rise of the Taliban, Osama bin Laden, and the 9/11 attacks.
In Afghanistan, the Saudi government, the Pakistani government, and the U.S. government all worked together to covertly supply troops and weapons to anti-Soviet forces in Afghanistan. The U.S. movie business even chipped in to promote the war by producing Rambo III.

For sale: West’s deadly nuclear secrets
A WHISTLEBLOWER has made a series of extraordinary claims about how corrupt government officials allowed Pakistan and other states to steal nuclear weapons secrets.
Sibel Edmonds, a 37-year-old former Turkish language translator for the FBI, listened into hundreds of sensitive intercepted conversations while based at the agency’s Washington field office.
She approached The Sunday Times last month after reading about an Al-Qaeda terrorist who had revealed his role in training some of the 9/11 hijackers while he was in Turkey.
Edmonds described how foreign intelligence agents had enlisted the support of US officials to acquire a network of moles in sensitive military and nuclear institutions.
Among the hours of covert tape recordings, she says she heard evidence that one well-known senior official in the US State Department was being paid by Turkish agents in Washington who were selling the information on to black market buyers, including Pakistan.
The name of the official – who has held a series of top government posts – is known to The Sunday Times. He strongly denies the claims.
Scam of the "Great Global Warming Swindle"
An excellent debunking of the scam "documentary": "The Great Global Warming Swindle". This analysis shows how the film's editor and the speakers in the film use every trick in the book to attempt to deceive the viewers of "Swindle" film. For example, the presentation shows how the film used the fact that the Earth's climate has always been changing (correct) to "prove" that humans could not now be causing global warming (incorrect). A PDF with detailed rebuttal of the film is here

UK Army 'recruiting children as young as seven in schools
Children as young as seven are being groomed for recruitment by the Army, which gives a "glamorised" and "gamelike" view of warfare, it has been claimed.
A study, funded by a Leftwing trust, says increasingly young children are being given a "misleading" picture of life in the armed forces, with vital information left out and risks ignored.
The Ministry of Defence rejected the claims, saying much of the study was "incorrect and ill-informed".
It agreed that junior schools were visited by Army education teams, but insisted this was to raise awareness of the forces rather than to target children as future recruits.

Kayapot to fight massive dam project
Brazilian Kayapo tribals at meeting to organize protests against large dams.
Mebegokre Kayapodians have vowed to oppose the building of five dams along the Xingu River in Amazonia. Two hundred Kayapot recently to discuss the dams, which they fear will have a devastating impact on the environment and will flood large parts of their land. Many Kayapo pressed their concern and anger that the Brazilian government and the electricity company Eletronorte had not been open about the project, and had flouted Brazil's constitution by failing to consult with the communities who will be affected if the project goes ahead.
It is a major disappointment that Brazilian President Lula, who was the great hope of the Brazilian people, either colludes with or turns a blind eye to the goings on of corporations in his country - at the cost of the sweet people of Brazil. Large dams must be opposed. They wreak unbounded destruction to biodiversity. They cause thousands or millions to be displaced, homeless, impoverished and devoid of their former cultural communities.

Iraqis Resort To Selling Children
Abu Muhammad, a Baghdad resident, found it difficult to let go of his daughter's hand but he had already convinced himself that selling her to a family outside Iraq would provide her with a better future.
"The war disgraced my family. I lost relatives including my wife among thousands of victims of sectarian violence and was forced to sell my daughter to give my other children something to eat," he told Al Jazeera.
In 2006, Abu Muhammad and his family were forced to leave their home in Adhamiya, a district of Baghdad, after militia fighting claimed the streets in his once tranquil neighborhood.
They began living in a makeshift refugee camp on the outskirts of Baghdad, but he soon lost his job and the children, unable to make the daily trek, quit school.
"There wasn't enough money to spend on books, clothes and transport," he said. His daughter, Fatima, the youngest of four children, began to show signs of malnourishment and a local medic said she had become anaemic.

Colombia gripped by hostage saga
The story of a boy born into captivity in the South American jungle has riveted people for more than a year in Colombia, striking a nerve in a country numbed by 40 years of political violence.
On Friday, the story took a stunning turn.
The top federal prosecutor in Colombia, Mario Iguaran Arana, said the 3-year-old child known simply as Emmanuel may not be a hostage after all.
Initial DNA test results, he said, suggest that Emmanuel has been living under an assumed name for more than two years with a foster family in Bogota, hundreds of miles from the jungle camp where he was born into captivity.
That revelation capped a week of dizzying developments that produced rare good news for relatives of about 700 hostages held by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, a leftist insurgent force that has sought to overthrow the Colombian government since the late 1960s.
The news, if confirmed, would hurt the credibility of the FARC and could also tarnish the reputation of President Hugo Chavez of neighboring Venezuela. Chavez struck a deal with the FARC that was to have led to freedom for Emmanuel, his mother and another hostage.
The boy's plight figured so prominently in the public imagination in South America that Chavez dubbed the mission "Operation Emmanuel."
Kenya's humanitarian crisis grows
At least 180,000 people have been displaced by unrest as the humanitarian crisis grows after last week's disputed election in Kenya, say UN officials.
Some have been housed in makeshift camps while others have sought refuge in police stations or churches, fleeing violence that has claimed 350 lives.
In badly-affected western Kenya nearly all the refugees are hungry, and several children have died of exposure.
A top UN official in Nairobi says about 500,000 Kenyans need urgent help.
The latest developments came as anti-government protests fizzled out and the president said he might accept opposition demands for a fresh election, but only if ordered by a court.

Couple banned for life from shopping centre and branded 'terrorists' - for taking photos of their grandchildren
They were thrown out of the centre after they took out a camera to snap the look on the youngsters' faces when they turned up unexpectedly.
The couple were on a four-day break from their home in Spain and wanted to surprise their family by arriving at the centre, in Fareham, Hants, while they were shopping. But when they went to take a photo, a security guard pounced and ordered them out.
The guard then insisted that cameras were banned because of the risk of a terrorist attack - and barred the bemused couple for life.
Speaking from her home in Malaga, Spain, Mrs Sparshott, 51, said: "I couldn't believe it. I was so shocked. "He said we had committed an act of terrorism. At first I wanted the ground to swallow me up whole because it was so embarrassing - but then I got really angry." Mr Sparshott, 52, added: "Instead of being a nice surprise for our family it turned into a nightmare. I was furious. In these worrying times we understand the need for caution, but surely a quiet word when he first saw us would have stopped all this unpleasantness."
Iraq Prisoner Amnesty To Exclude Gays
The Iraq government is considering the release of some 5,000 prisoners but a spokesperson said it would not include terrorists or homosexuals.
The Iraqi government has about 20,000 people in custody, while the U.S. military holds about 25,000.
Homosexuality itself is not illegal in Iraq, but police regularly arrest gays on other charges often trumped up.
The amnesty bill drafted by the Shiite-dominated government falls far short of Sunni demands. About the only thing on which the two sides agree is that imprisoned gays not be freed.
The amnesty would cover less than a quarter of the total number of people held in Iraqi prisons, and none of those held by the American military.
Sunni parliamentarians have criticized the bill for its limited scope. They have argued that most prisoners are charged with terrorist crimes, rendering it ineffective. Some also fear referring the bill to Iraq's gridlocked parliament will actually delay prisoner releases.
The total number of gays being held is not known. And, they may be the lucky ones, according to some LGBT activists.
Death squads imposing strict Islamic law are reportedly responsible for the murders of hundreds of gay men across Iraq.
Last year the leader of an exiled Iraqi LGBT rights group told a London conference on homophobia that that militias blamed for the murders of hundreds of gay men and women are sanctioned by the government and the US-led coalition is doing little to stop the killings. (story)

Criminal Probe Into CIA Tapes
The US department of justice will launch a criminal investigation into the destruction of videotapes showing the interrogation of terrorism suspects, the US attorney-general has said.
Michael Mukasey on Wednesday appointed John Durham, a federal prosecutor, to oversee the investigation.
Mukasey said: "The department's national security division has recommended, and I have concluded, that there is a basis for initiating a criminal investigation of this matter, and I have taken steps to begin that investigation."
Last month, the CIA had acknowledged that it destroyed videos of officers using allegedly tough interrogation methods while questioning two "terror" suspects.

Anglo-American ambitions behind the assassination of Benazir Bhutto and destabilization of Pakistan
It has been known for months that the Bush-Cheney administration and its allies have been maneuvering to strengthen their political control of Pakistan, paving the way for the expansion and deepening of the “war on terrorism” across the region. The assassination of Benazir Bhutto does not change this agenda. In fact, it simplifies Bush-Cheney’s options.
“Delivering democracy to the Muslim world” has been the Orwellian rhetoric used to mask Bush-Cheney’s application of pressure and force, its dramatic attempt at reshaping the Pakistani government (into a joint Bhutto/Sharif-Musharraf) coalition, and backdoor plans for a military intervention. Various American destabilization plans, known for months by officials and analysts, proposed the toppling of Pakistan's military.
The assassination of Bhutto appears to have been anticipated. There were even reports of “chatter” among US officials about the possible assassinations of either Pervez Musharraf or Benazir Bhutto, well before the actual attempts took place.
As succinctly summarized in Jeremy Page’s article, "Who Killed Benazir Bhutto? The Main Suspects", the primary suspects are 1) “Pakistani and foreign Islamist militants who saw her as a heretic and an American stooge," and 2) the Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI, a virtual branch of the CIA. Bhutto’s husband Asif Ali Zardari directly accused the ISI of being involved in the October attack.
The assassination of Bhutto has predictably been blamed on “Al-Qaeda,” without mention of fact that Al-Qaeda itself is an Anglo-American military-intelligence operation.
More about Inter-Services Intelligence on Wikipedia:
"Critics of the ISI say that it has become a state within a state, answerable neither to the leadership of the army, nor to the President or the Prime Minister. The ISI has been deeply involved in domestic politics of Pakistan since the late 1950s. The 1990 elections for example were widely believed to have been rigged by the ISI in favor of the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) party, a conglomerate of nine mainly rightist parties by the ISI under Lt. General Hameed Gul, to ensure the defeat of Bhutto's Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in the polls."
