Student in anti-government protest in Turkey faces 98 years in jail for wearing red scarf
Prosecutors in Turkey are demanding the maximum sentence for Ayse Deniz Karacagil, saying that her scarf represented socialism. The 20-year-old has spent the last four months in jail after being arrested for taking part in an anti-government protest.
Ayse was part of a group who took to the streets of Antalya, southern Turkey, last September to complain at the death of demonstrator Ahmet Atakan. The circumstances of his death have still not been explained.
Ayse was singled out when police moved to break up the demonstration and they managed to get a photograph of her wearing the red scarf.
Red, according to prosecutors, is the colour of socialism, and that meant that she knew by wearing the red scarf she was indicating her membership of the illegal MLKP, an underground Anti-Revisionist Marxist-Leninist and Hoxhaist communist party in Turkey. However Ayse says she wore it solely to protect herself when the tear gas was sprayed.
She is facing a sentence of between 24 and 98 years in jail over charges of being a member of a terrorist organisation, opposing Assembly Law and resisting against law enforcement officers. Four others face between 11 and 95 years in jail for being at the event.

Bernard "Bernie" Sanders (born September 8, 1941) is the junior United States Senator from Vermont. He previously represented Vermont's at-large district in the United States House of Representatives. Sanders also served as mayor of Burlington, Vermont.
Sanders is a self-described democratic socialist, and has praised European social democracy (though he has also criticized its contemporary "Third Way" departure). He is the first person elected to the U.S. Senate to identify as a socialist. Sanders caucuses with the Democratic Party and is counted as a Democrat for the purposes of committee assignments, but because he does not belong to a formal political party, he appears as an independent on the ballot. He was also the only independent member of the House during much of his service there.

Billy Bragg's neighbours urged to drive him out of village
Neighbours of the British singer-songwriter and political activist Billy Bragg have received hate mail calling on them to force him out their village because of his socialist beliefs.
Up to 30 anonymous letters have been sent to the residents of Burton Bradstock in Dorset accusing Bragg of being a hypocrite for enjoying a wealthy lifestyle while espousing socialist views.
Bragg believes the letters are the work of a disgruntled BNP supporter and has urged his neighbours to bin them. Simon Holdcroft, who runs the village post office, received one of the typed letters. "It was quite bizarre and was a racist rant at Billy Bragg," he said.
Bragg said he believed a BNP supporter was behind the letters. "It is clear from the content that this anonymous letter has been written by a disgruntled supporter of the British National party," he said. "I have campaigned against the Tories in West Dorset for the past 10 years, but they have never stooped so low as to randomly circulate hate mail in the hope of undermining my credibility. This pathetic attempt at intimidation reminds voters that the BNP are not like any other political party – their methods betray them.
