Money trail to Hamas begins with Israeli banks

Israeli authorities tracking Hamas's funds said they made an unexpected discovery last month -- cash from one of Israel's biggest banks had found its way to a security force loyal to the Palestinian Islamists in Gaza.

Officials, speaking to Reuters this week on condition of anonymity, said the incident sparked a inquiry by the Justice Ministry's anti-money laundering authority and fuelled debate within the Israeli government and banking community over whether to cut financial links to Palestinian banks in the Gaza Strip.

That debate came to a head when Israel's largest commercial bank, Bank Hapoalim (POLI.TA: Quote, Profile, Research), said on Tuesday it would stop providing Israeli shekel notes and coins to Gaza. Hapoalim attributed the move to last week's declaration by Israel that Gaza, where Hamas seized control in June, is an "enemy entity".

European-made condoms are infected with HIV

The head of the Catholic Church in Mozambique has told the BBC he believes some European-made condoms are infected with HIV deliberately.

Maputo Archbishop Francisco Chimoio claimed some anti-retroviral drugs were also infected "in order to finish quickly the African people".

The Catholic Church formally opposes any use of condoms, advising fidelity within marriage or sexual abstinence.

A Bad Day for Cannabis

Hundreds of young children illegally trafficked into the UK are the new victims of Britain's booming cannabis trade. Figures obtained by The Independent on Sunday reveal that, as organised criminals push cannabis production to record levels, at least one child a week is being found by police raiding cannabis factories.

Experts warn that children as young as 13 are been smuggled from south-east Asia to work as "slaves" for gangs in dangerous conditions, being kept captive in towns and suburbs across the UK. They believe there has been a five-fold increase in the trade in the past 12 months.

Police believe organised crime gangs, largely Vietnamese, have moved quickly to dominate the UK cannabis market after declassification in 2004 increased the potential rewards of growing and selling the drug and decreased the risks of punishment.

Myanmar Monks Protests

Monks are now taking the lead in protests against Myanmar's military rulers.

Thousands of Buddhist monks are reported to have joined anti-government marches in Myanmar, a day after police used tear gas and fired warning shots to break up a similar protest in the north of the country.

In the former capital, Yangon, a march of about 500 monks walked through the city streets after they were barred from entering the Shwedagon pagoda, one of the country's most important religious sites.

Witnesses said the monks were watched by plainclothes security officials, but no action was taken to try to break up the march.

Other marches also took place in Myanmar's second city of Mandalay, and the north-western coastal city of Sittwe where witnesses said at least 2,000 monks had joined a protest march.

Several thousand residents watched the march, but were told by the monks not to join in, an unnamed local witness told Reuters.

A similar protest in Sittwe on Tuesday was broken up by security officials using tear gas and firing warning shots.

On Wednesday, a report in state-run New Light of Myanmar newspaper acknowledged that authorities had used force to break up the protests, saying the action had been taken after protesters had injured police and other officials.

The report blamed "bogus" monks and other instigators for starting the trouble.

It said senior Buddhist leaders had urged the monks to disperse, but the crowd retaliated by throwing stones and sticks.

Uganda declared a state of emergency Thursday in the worst flood-affected areas of the country as humanitarian workers tried to reach villages that have been cut off by water.

Uganda is among the nations hit hardest by floods that have swept across 17 countries in Africa in recent weeks. At least 200 people have been killed across the continent, and hundreds of thousands displaced. In Uganda, floods killed 21 people since August, said deputy police spokeswoman Judith Nabakoba. "We expected the rains which have been falling since early August to ease off, but they are getting worse and we are seeing more and more people affected," said Relief and Disaster Preparedness Minister Tarsis Kabwegyere.

A meteorite has struck a remote part of Peru and carved a large crater that is emitting noxious odours and making villagers ill, according to local press reports. A fireball streaked across the Andean sky late on Saturday night and crashed into a field near Carancas, a sparsely populated highland wilderness near Lake Titicaca on the border with Bolivia, witnesses said.
The orange streak and loud bang were initially thought to be a plane crashing. When farmers went to investigate, however, they found a crater at least 10m wide and 5m deep, but no sign of wreckage.

On September 15th, tens of thousands of people rallied at Lafayette Park in Washington DC, in the United States, and then marched from the White House to the US Capitol to demand an immediate end to the occupation of Iraq. The protest culminated with hundreds of people participating in a "die-in" surrounding the Capitol. More than 193 protestors were individually arrested after crossing a short barrier surrounding the Capitol. Many members of the Iraq Veterans Against the War contingent were arrested, including family members of veterans and active duty soldiers, as well as veterans of the Vietnam War.

The civil disobedience was large enough that the Capitol police tried to stop arresting people and someone in charge yelled that the protestors had made their point. The police at the wall began to push back anyone trying to get arrested, and sprayed chemicals from a small red cannister on two people who tried, and finally succeeded, to get arrested. Capitol Police told the New York Times that arrestees will be charged with "illegally crossing a police line." The rights of protestors were trampled on throughout the day, especially at 67 K Street where the arrestees were being held.
Earlier, a single line on Pennsylvania Avenue of "Gathering of Eagles" and Young Republicans, a majority of whom never served in Iraq, yelled "traitor" at the Iraq Veterans Against the War contingent heading the antiwar march. The Iraq War veterans chanted, "We Are the Troops! Bring us Home!," while marching with flags printed with the names of big war contractors including Bechtel, Lockheed Martin, Blackwater and CACI.

Archbishop of York Calls for Full Sanctions Against Mugabe Regime

The Anglican Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, has called on the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to revisit the country's policy on Zimbabwe and lead a campaign of foreign intervention. Blackwater USA, an American contractor that provides security to some of the top American officials in Iraq, has been banned from working in the country by the Iraqi government after a shooting that left eight Iraqis dead and involved an American diplomatic convoy.

Blackwater contractors in Baghdad in 2005. Reports of the number of its employees in Iraq ranged from 1,000 to 1,500. A spokesman for the Ministry of Interior, Brig. Gen. Abdul Karim Khalaf, said Monday that authorities had canceled the company’s license and that the government would prosecute the participants. But under the rules that govern private security contractors here, the Iraqis do not have the legal authority to do so.

Central African Republic Government Forces Kill Hundreds

Government troops, notably the elite Presidential Guard, have carried out hundreds of unlawful killings and burned thousands of civilian homes since mid-2005 in their counterinsurgency campaign in northern Central African Republic (CAR), a new report by Human Rights Watch charged.

The sorry fact is that the perpetrators of violence and abuse, the majority of them government soldiers, have so far enjoyed total impunity for acts that include war crimes.

The new 108-page report released today, "State of Anarchy: Rebellion and Abuses Against Civilians," is based on three weeks of on-the-ground research. It documents the human rights abuses and breaches of the laws of war committed in northern CAR by both rebel groups and the government forces, and also documents attacks by banditry groups in the northwest known as zaraguinas, who often kidnap children for ransom.  
“Just across the border from Darfur, the army of the Central African Republic has killed hundreds of innocent civilians and forced tens of thousands to flee their villages,”  
said Peter Takirambudde, Africa director at Human Rights Watch. “The widespread burning of homes by government security forces is the signature abuse of the conflict.”

Alex Jones Arrested In New York

Media activist Alex Jones was arrested by New York Police Department officers while filming a documentary about the sixth anniversary of September 11th and joining the protest against the official version of what happened on 9/11.

According to Infowars sources Jones was singled out by police from the head of a crowd of about 400 9/11 Truth Activists and protesters. He was verbally accosted and forced by the police officers to present identification which he was not carrying at the time.

Jones was arrested during a protest of the live Geraldo broadcast on Fox News.

 

 

Geraldo ridiculed protesters and lauded the arrests as live footage of Alex being frog marched away by officers was broadcast, refering to them as "anarchists," "communists" and "one of the least attractive groups of protesters I've ever seen".

Three years after U.S. Army Private Armando Soriano, 20, died fighting in Haditha, Iraq, his father is facing deportation. Soriano is now buried in Houston, Tex., his hometown, where his parents, undocumented workers from Mexico, are currently living.
Before his death Soriano had promised his parents he’d help them get green cards. He only succeeded partially before losing his life. Although his mother was able to obtain a green card, his father did not qualify and is on the verge of being deported.
Enrique Soriano, Armando’s father, is not the only person to have lost a son or daughter in the Iraq war and face deportation. There are more than 3 million people born in the U.S. with parents who came into the country illegally. Those born in the U.S. are automatically citizens and have all the rights and duties enjoyed by Americans. That includes military service with the possibility of losing one’s life.

Monks seize troops in Burma town

Buddhist monks have taken about 20 members of the security forces hostage in central Burma, a day after clashes at a protest rally.

On Wednesday the security forces fired shots into the air to disperse some 400 monks demonstrating in Pakokku town. When officials came to the monastery on Thursday, the monks locked them inside and set their vehicles on fire.

The officials had reportedly come to apologise for the clashes at Wednesday's demonstration. But the monks burned four of the vehicles they came in and locked them inside the monastery.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the gates to applaud the monks. "The security forces outside the monastery are too afraid to go near the crowd," one resident told the French news agency AFP. "They won't even show their walkie-talkies."

A series of anti-government protests have been held since the military junta doubled fuel prices last month.

US troops ‘thought killing civilians was legal’

  Documents regarding crimes committed by US soldiers against civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan show repeated examples of soldiers believing they were within the law when they killed them.

The documents, released yesterday by the American Civil Liberties Union ahead of a lawsuit, total nearly 10,000 pages of courts martial summaries, transcripts and military reports about 22 incidents.

The killings include the drowning of a man soldiers pushed from a bridge into the Tigris river as punishment for breaking curfew, and the suffocation during interrogation of a former Iraqi general believed to be helping insurgents.

Soldiers covered the man’s head with a sleeping bag, then wrapped his neck with an electrical cord in what they insisted was an approved technique.

All UK 'must be on DNA database'

The whole population and every UK visitor should be added to the national DNA database, a senior judge has said.
The present database in England and Wales holds details of 4m people who are guilty or cleared of a crime.

Lord Justice Sedley said this was indefensible and biased against ethnic minorities, and it would be fairer to include everyone, guilty or innocent.

Dutch girl serves with Colombian rebels

Colombia expert and former Pax Christi worker Lidwien Zumpolle says at least three Dutch citizens are directly involved with the FARC guerrilla movement in Colombia. She claims the FARC are also recruiting in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Belgium and Greece. Her remarks follow publication in the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo of extracts from the diary of a Dutch woman fighting with the FARC. She is known as "Eillen", but turns out to be ex-student Tanja Nijmeijer who joined the FARC four years ago. Her diaries were found by the Colombian army in a rebel camp which had been abandoned in haste. More on Radio Netherlands Worldwide

23 August 2006: I managed to ring home! But I didn't get permission beforehand and now Frits is mad at me, but I don't care. It was wonderful to hear their voices. 24 November 2006: I'm tired, tired of the FARC, tired of people and tired of living in this commune. I'm fed up of never having anything of my own. All of this would have a purpose if you knew what you were fighting for. I don't believe in it any more. What sort of rebel movement is this? Only a few people have money or cigarettes or sweets and the rest of us have to beg for a share, but you know the higher-ups will just be nasty and say no. It was exactly the same four years ago when I joined, nothing has changed. A girl with big tits and a pretty face can totally undermine a unit that has worked together for ages (...) I don't know if I'll ever get out of this jungle (...) I want to get out of here, at least out this unit. But you know that you're a sort of prisoner here (...) It's not the FARC so much as this unit.(...) but had enough of all that blah blah blah about being a Communist (...) all the commandants are corrupt, traitors, and rabble-rousers and traitors. Congo rebels seize gorilla park

Rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo have taken control of large parts of the Virunga National Park, home to rare mountain gorillas.
The move has raised fears for the fate of the gorillas. Only 700 remain - half of which are in Virunga.

Meanwhile, the army says it has killed at least 28 troops loyal to rebel General Laurent Nkunda in the latest fighting in eastern DR Congo.
Some 170,000 people have fled the area this year, says the UN refugee agency.

"If anything happens to the mountain gorillas now, there is nothing we can do," said Norbert Mushenzi of the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN).

"As of today, the sector is no longer under my control and we have been rendered powerless by these actions." Nine gorillas have been killed this year, allegedly by Gen Nkunda's men, sparking outrage among conservationists.

Guatemala's child-snatching plague

American couples are flocking to the hotels of Guatemala City, but not to see the country's ancient Mayan remains nor the capital's more limited modern charms. Instead they are flying south in droves in the hope of embracing a bouncing new addition to their families - a baby, priced at about $30,000 (£15,000).

One in 100 Guatemalan children grow up in the US. The Central American country has the highest rate of international adoptions per head of any country in the world, and babies come high on the list of foreign currency earners - just below bananas.

Aaron Russo 1943-2007 : Mad As Hell

We were saddened to hear of the passing of activist, film maker, freedom fighter and all round maverick Aaron Russo, who died Friday after a long battle with cancer at the age of 64.
Russo became involved in politics in the early 1990s when he produced and starred in a video entitled Mad As Hell in which he criticized NAFTA, The War on Drugs, the concept of a National Identity Card, and government regulation of alternative medicine. More at Prison Planet

Radiation Breeding

Though poorly known, radiation breeding has produced thousands of useful mutants and a sizable fraction of the world’s crops, Dr. Lagoda said, including varieties of rice, wheat, barley, pears, peas, cotton, peppermint, sunflowers, peanuts, grapefruit, sesame, bananas, cassava and sorghum. The mutant wheat is used for bread and pasta and the mutant barley for beer and fine whiskey.

The mutations can improve yield, quality, taste, size and resistance to disease and can help plants adapt to diverse climates and conditions.

Dr. Lagoda takes pains to distinguish the little-known radiation work from the contentious field of genetically modified crops, sometimes disparaged as “Frankenfood.” That practice can splice foreign genetic material into plants, creating exotic varieties grown widely in the United States but often feared and rejected in Europe. By contrast, radiation breeding has made few enemies.
